Matfen Village

The lovely village of Matfen is well worth a visit. Located close to Hadrian's Wall, this eighteenth-century planned estate village has a gently flowing stream, village green and attractive stone dwellings.

Built some 200 years ago, the attractive, creeper-covered Black Bull Inn fronts the village green and has low beams and open fires.

The village is dominated by Matfen Hall, built in 1830 by Sir Edward Blackett. This imposing ancestral home has been converted into a luxury 4-star country house hotel. The hotel boasts a state-of-the-art spa and leisure club. The magnificent grounds of the hall boast an excellent eighteen hole golf course is rated as one of the finest in the North East.

The Matfen Stone
Situated down a side road on the left about 1 mile south of Matfen village on the edge of an impeccably manicured grass verge lies the Matfen stone. The stone is about six foot high and has the same deep harsh vertical grooves caused by weathering as the Devil's Arrows. What's different about the Matfen Stone is the many cupmarks carved around the base (well over thirty).
